Streamline the structure of your online store and boost your sales

A clear e-commerce site structure makes it easier to find products and streamlines the shopping experience. Read our tips on how to boost sales through navigation.

Have you ever wondered how you could help your customers find your online store and the products they’re looking for more easily? The answer lies in carefully categorizing the products you sell. With a well-thought-out categorization system, your customers can easily navigate between different product categories and find what they’re looking for more quickly. Clear and user-friendly product navigation is a critical part of your online store - it can make or break your business.

The importance of product navigation cannot be underestimated, as its effectiveness largely determines the success of your online store’s search engine and conversion optimization, as well as your digital marketing efforts. All of these factors are directly linked to sales and revenue - in other words, to your company’s success. Designing product navigation is therefore an essential part of developing your online store to drive better sales.

Marketing Efficiency Through Search Engine Visibility

When designing product navigation, it’s important to keep clarity and a customer-centric approach in mind: it’s crucial that the names of product categories and the items for sale correspond to one another. If a customer is looking for rubber boots in your online store, and the “shoes” product category includes everything from sneakers to high heels, the customer experience will be poor, and in the worst case, a potential buyer won’t find what they’re looking for. When boots have their own product category, finding the desired product becomes faster and easier. Logically designed product categorization also affects the functionality of the internal site search.

Product categorization, combined with informative landing pages, enables profitable and effective online marketing for your store at . If your customer clicks on an ad for rubber boots and ends up on a page featuring hundreds of different types of shoes, they’ll likely switch to another store pretty quickly. This means you’ll miss out on the sale, and the marketing efforts targeted at that customer will also go to waste. Conversely, if a customer finds the product they’re looking for directly by clicking on an ad, it’s more likely to end up in their shopping cart.

Let your online store generate additional sales for you

Product navigation in an online store can be structured as either a list-based, suggestive, or hybrid model. Which type of navigation is best suited for a particular business depends largely on the industry.

With a catalog-style product categorization, it’s easy for customers to navigate to the product they’re looking for. In a pet supply store, catalog-style product categorization can be broadly divided at the top level into, for example, shampoos, grooming tools, and food supplies. Under “grooming tools,” the breakdown continues into clippers, brushes, and undercoat removers.

However, whenever possible, we often recommend suggestive product navigation, as its upselling capabilities make it the most effective approach. In suggestive product navigation, the online store’s product categories are organized by theme. For example, under a single main category, you can group together fur dryers, conditioners, and grooming clippers - all of which are related to dog coat care.

When a customer looking for grooming scissors navigates to the “Coat Care” main category, they’ll see a selection of all products related to dog coat care. When exposed to these products, the customer is likely to buy more and more often, which increases both the conversion rate and the average order value. Through suggestive product categorization, the online store essentially generates additional sales on the merchant’s behalf.

A well-designed online store structure therefore benefits both the customer and the retailer. When products are clearly categorized with the customer’s needs in mind, shopping becomes easier, marketing becomes more effective, and opportunities for upselling increase. That’s why it’s worth investing in product navigation design right from the start when building an online store and regularly reviewing its effectiveness as the store evolves.
